    Martha Hemingway is the director, choreographer, and instructor for the Happy Feet Cloggers, an adult clogging group from Fairfax, Virginia. She teaches beginner, intermediate, and performer clogging classes on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for the City of Fairfax Parks and Rec Dept., Green Acres Center, 4401 Sideburn Road, Fairfax, Virginia. Martha first learned to clog when she joined a Northern Virginia group called the Sugarfoot Cloggers in 1987. In September 2000 she founded the Happy Feet Cloggers. She was an instructor at the Potomac Double Down clogging workshop in Haymarket, Virginia, in 2006 and 2007 and an instructor at the Washington Area Square Dancers Cooperative Association’s (WASCA) clogging workshop in 2005 and 2006. Her first experience as a dance instructor was teaching tap and jazz classes for the Fairfax County Rec Dept. She also taught tap at The Dance Company, a private dance studio, and for the Fairfax County Park Authority. Martha’s “Happy Feeters” competed in the 2001 Mid-Atlantic Clogging Championship, held in Maryland each year. Her team brought home three 1st-place trophies, one 2nd-place trophy, and two 3rd-place trophies. Happy Feet is funded in part by the City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts.

    Hi! I am Martha Hemmingway and I am teaching basic clogging steps. This is our final segment, where I thought it would be nice is to put together some of the clogging terms that you have learned earlier. We will put together a little mini routine. Instead of just doing the routine and having you follow me I am going to break each step down very, very quickly just as a review and then well put the whole thing together and of course I will queue it as we are doing it. So, lets give it start.

    Okay, you are going to do two basics, and one triple stomp; double step, double step, double step, stomp, and stomp. Your right foot is free, we just going to immediately do everything starting on the other foot, two basics and triple stomp. Next, we are going to do a chain rock moving forward just a little and a fancy double and chain rock back and a fancy double. As you recall a chain rock is one double step and three rock steps. Fancy double would be on your right foot, do two double steps, two rock steps. Your right foot is still free, we are going to backup on the chain rock step and a fancy double left. Next, we are going to do two outhouses and two rocking chairs. As you recall the outhouse is the one where you start of the double step and you touch out first; start it on the right, then we go straight into two rocking chairs, double step, brush up and a basic and repeat it. We are going to add a clog over vine going to the left and then a clog over vine brining it back to the right and we will finish up with two basics and my favorite shave and a haircut, two basics left and right and probably because I will get so excited at the end of this routine and I will probably going to go clap down just because thats a neat way to end a routine.

    Okay, here we go, we are going put it all together from the very beginning; five, six, two basics, go and a basic, triple stomp left, two basics, triple stomp. Now, chain rock forward, fancy double right, chain rock back, fancy double, outhouse, other foot, rocking chair, double step, brush up, and a basic, do it again, clog over vine and one and a two, and a three, and a four, and a five, and a six, and a seven. to the right, two basics, here is the grand finale.
