Jeff Chaffin: The Texas State Fair has been around for a hundred years. It runs for just 24 days each year at the end of September. On any given day there are 75 attractions in operation, but one stands tall above the rest. Standing 212 feet 6 inches, the Texas Star Ferris wheel is not only the tallest ride at the fair; it's the tallest Ferris wheel in the country.
Manufactured in Reggiolo, Italy it is still owned by the family who brought it to the Lone Star State.
Michael Sandefur: It actually was my brother-in-law actually had it built for the sesquicentennial.
Jeff Chaffin: The State Fair at Texas acquired the new amusement ride in celebration of the state's sesquicentennial in 1985. Mike Sandefur and his family have been operating the Ferris wheel ever since.
It is lit by 16000 red, white and blue turbo lights and 880 gondola lights. In 2008, the incandescent lighting system was replaced with a longer lasting more energy efficient LED lighting system.
