Amy BevinsAmy Carney Bevins is a writer, an editor for FAMILY Magazine, an educator and a veteran mom with over 110,000 hours of on the job experience. Amy has published numerous articles on topics ranging from cooking and travel to health issues and toys, as well as several humorous and thought-provoking essays about parenthood. Here she worked as part of a grant funded team to develop and implement a one year certificate program for Educational Assistants with links to two and four year degrees. This program was also part of a statewide collaboration, incorporating cutting edge technology to provide educational opportunities to students in remote parts of the state. Amy worked briefly as a student teaching Practicum Supervisor at the University of Illinois. Amy Bevin: Hi! I am Amy Bevins, I am a writer and educator, and I am also a mom. Today, we are making spooky, creepy Halloween treats. Right now, we are working on Bloody Worms. I found that with kids, the more gruesome and icky, the name sounds, the more they dive right in and enjoy it. One of the best things about this treat is not only that is easy to make, you make it with things that most moms already have on hand, hotdog, ketchup, and water.
To get started, the first thing you want to do is fill a pot with boiling water, right about a quarter water and put it on the stove and get it started while you are prepping your hotdogs. The next thing you are going to do is take a hotdog and you are going to slice it lengthwise, all the way down the hot dog. Once you have it sliced in half, you are going to cut into strips. What I found is on a regular hot dog, I can get about three strips out of a hot dog. If you are using one of the big jumbo Ballpark hotdogs, sometimes you can get four. Another great thing about this recipe, you can make it with hot regular hotdogs, turkey hotdogs, chicken hotdogs, fat free hotdogs, if that is your preference, to make it a little bit healthier for the kids, and once you have your hotdogs, all cut into some long strips, then the fun is really going to begin. Just get these sliced up here and we will add them to our pot. My kids love eating things when they are really gross sounding, and I am sure most other peoples kids do to, and at Halloween its one of the best times to bring out the really spooky, yucky, treats that kids love.
So, now we are going to take our hotdog. I am going over to the pot that is already boiling for us, and we are going to put the hot dog strips in the pot of boiling water and you really need to watch them as they start to cook, they kind of creep and twist and curl. Nice boiling warm sensation, and one of the great things is if your kids have ever read the book How to Eat Fried Worms this is like serving them boiled worms; they are going to love it. But as you can see, they are going to start to twist and become worms. We need to cook about 2-5 minutes depending on how thick they are and the longer we cook, the more they will begin to curl into nice wiggly worm like pieces. You got a nice full pot of boiling worms, after they have cooked 2-5 minutes, you are going to want it take them out of the water and get them on a plate. This is where you need to remember your kitchen safety especially if you are working with kids, grown up would need to move the hot pot. You can use your tongs, you can either drain them or you can just use your tongs and put them in a bowl, we are going to get this bowl nice and full, because we have got lots of hungry kids who like to eat worms, and as you put them in a bowl, you kind of want them look like worms; a lot of worms in here. So, you want to get them all out so everybody can enjoy their Halloween treats, and then as you are serving them you kind of want to be careful as they are quite hot that you want to drape them over the edge of the bowl, to really give it that worm like look. With worms you definitely -- we need to make this really gross for the kids to enjoy it, so what we are going to do next is to serve worms in blood. Just going to set off to the side and ketchup is a perfect blood for our worms, every kid loves hot dog and ketchup. You might want to serve a little bit on the side for them to dip into. Then you just want to take the ketchup and drizzle it over the worms, so it looks they are covered with blood and I can guarantee every kid is going to want to dive in and have some bloody worms for a Halloween treat.
