Amanda Gizzi: Hi I am Amanda Gizzi with Jewellery Information Center. Today we will talk about how to untangle your jewelry.
Delicate chains of silver, gold and platinum can get easily tangled. Most of us have spent hours trying to remove pesky little knots out of our favorite necklaces. There are a few simple tips you must know that can make removing the knots a breeze or at least a little less frustrating.
Start by gathering a few supplies. You will need two fine point needles such as pin needles and a dab of oil such as olive, vegetable or baby oil. Place the chain in a flat hard surface, holding it in air can actually make the chain get further tangled and you will have to contend with gravity. Then unclasp the chain.
Some people like to keep the necklace clasped, but in our experience we think it's easier to untangle when it is unclasped. Gently rub a very small amount oil on the knot, the oil will serve as a lubricant to help loosen the knot.
Next find the center of the knot and take your two needles and gently start loosening the knot from the center.
Focus on the center of the knot and try to make the knot expand. Once the knot has expanded, follow each chain moving the pieces as you go and be patient. Frustration can lead to broken chains or a further tangled mess.
Once you are knot free, clean your jewelry by dipping the oily part into a mixture of mild detergent and warm water. Rinse it and pad it dry with a lint-free cloth. Do not fully immerse the entire chain; you don't want to end up back where you started.
To keep the knots from reoccurring hang each chain individually if you have the space, making sure that multiple chains do not touch each other.
If you need to travel or store them in the box place the piece in a small zip closure baggy, keeping the clasp, hanging out of the top of the bag.
Follow these simple tips and your jewelry will be tangle free.
