Josh Dubois: Hi! I am Josh Dubois, and today we're talking about the new Third Generation iPhone and the Software Release 2.0. And right now we are going to go over to one of the most anticipated features of the new 3G phone and that's the GPS capability.
Okay, to take a look at maps in GPS, we go into Maps on our home screen. It's going to come up and to enable the GPS there is this little button down at the bottom left, go ahead and hit that. It's going to calculate out where you are. It takes a while to do this. All this is doing is I want to explain a little something about the GPS, I don't think that we are going to realize the full capabilities of the iPhone GPS until a couple of months after the release. The reason is there are lots of software companies out there developing Voice-Command GPS. So basically the iPhone is going to be really similar to a Garmin or a TomTom that you would already have in your car.
Now I took this GPS in my car earlier today and drove around to test it out and found that I was a little disappointed with its GPS capabilities. At one time I was driving on a road, and it had me actually in the water in the Potomac River. Sometimes it does this too where it goes black when you are trying to wait for a GPS signal to come up and it takes a while to do.
Now the GPS only works on the 3G network. Okay, once the GPS has calculated out your location it starts to radiate a little circle around it like this. Then you can type-in a different location and map out the directions, it will tell you the miles and the times that it will take to get to this location, then you just say, Start, and it gives you turn-by-turn directions to this location. Now keep in mind that if you lose your signal you're going to lose the directions as well.
Now I think that there is a lot to come with this GPS and we will see a lot of applications to utilize it in order to tell you the restaurants that are close to you or stores that are close to you. And we are going to see lots of different other things like the ability to see where your friends are when they have specific applications on. I think the GPS could be a really, really great feature in the future.
