Dog Care - Microchips

<p>Dr. Candy Olson: Hi! I am Dr. Candy Olson owner of GreenBriar Animal Hospital. We are shooting a video with the bunch of tips on how to take care of your dog. This is Cedy, she is going to be helping us out with this section on microchips and why you should get a microchip for your dog. Little bit of background information here, microchips are readily available in this country and pretty much every shelter or veterinarian, every rescue league. It&#39;s scanning the animal that time they are coming with the chip. Just so that you can see what these things look like we took, this is an actual microchip here. It&#39;s just a little bit bigger than a grain of rice and the way it works is you scan over it and the scanner pops up with this number and so if they scan your dog and they have this number then they are going to call there is a 24x7 registry. They are going to call and give him this number and the owner of the chip is going to get the call and say Hey, we&#39;ve got your dog or in this case TJ.</p><p>As far as Cedy is concerned when this is use to scan her, all you do is just go over her back like this with that and you can go right over the top of the little bandana or if she was wearing a sweater or something and that little beep says that she&#39;s got a chip. So, Cedy&#39;s owner will get a get call and say Hey, We found Cedy, and we will come and get her. It&#39;s a marvelous thing for dogs and cats to have this ID that they can&#39;t lose. It is also all across the country used in a technology here so that dogs that have microchips are being returned to their owners at very high rate about five time the rate of lost dogs don&#39;t have the microchip. Putting in a microchip is pretty easy it&#39;s basically like getting a big shot just takes a couple of minutes. This is the way the microchip comes. It actually in a special sterile syringe in here and you just pop it like the shot the whole thing takes a minute or two and it is guaranteed for her lifetime. When we put the chips in here we include registration in the 24 hour registry because that&#39;s the really important part and it doesn&#39;t help to have a microchip in the dog if you don&#39;t have your information on file on the database because then they can&#39;t find you. It is important to have that registration it&#39;s also important to make sure that you update it if you move, phone number is changed or that kind of thing because so that way they can, can track you down. It is also important if you tucking into and looking into getting a microchip to make sure it is the right kind, there are couple of microchip currently available in this country that are the type that are not read by the scanners that are in common use and so where just a couple of quick questions to ask we highly recommend microchips for all our dogs.
