Vicki Bentley: Hi! I am Vicki Bentley, Early Years Coordinator for the Home School Legal Defense Association. Let's talk about home-schooling your pre-schooler.

Parents are already qualified to home-school their pre-schoolers. Here are some tips to make the learning process even easier.

Pre-schoolers want to play with toys and pretend, so let them. Provide your child with stimulating age appropriate developmental toys. Duplos or legos or building blocks are excellent starting points.

Everyday activities are helpful for your child's brain and skills development. For example, completing puzzles is a pre-reading skill. Having them help put away their things in an orderly fashion is classification and organization, which are basic Science, Math and language art skills.

To help with your child's language development, work with them on alphabet puzzles, notes to grandma, telling you about their latest adventure or just cuddling up for a read-aloud time.

If you want to have more structured time, look for guides to help you plan activities based on the interests of your child.

Remember, an hour of one-on-one instruction is about the equivalent of three hours in a conventional setting. So for pre-school through kindergarten, or even possibly first grade, an hour of one-on-one structured learning time is enough.

These tips will help you get started with home-schooling your pre-schooler.
