Crystal Allison: I am Crystal Allison from Colvin Run Mill Historic Site in Great Falls, Virginia. Colvin Run Mill Historic Site is a part of Fairfax County Park Authority and every year we make scarecrows. Today, I am going to show you how to make a basic scarecrow.

These are some of the items that you will need to assemble before you make your scarecrow. You will need a pair of pantyhose. The pantyhose will become the arms and the head of your scarecrow. You need a button up shirt, so that you can button it, to make a collar for your scarecrow.

Also you need it so you get into it, to stuff more straw into the scarecrow as needed. And you will need a pair of pants with belt loops, so that you can tie the suspenders onto the scarecrow. And you will need some twine or some string to tie up your scarecrow and a pair of scissors. Today I am using straw to stuff the scarecrow. Straw is a traditional material to stuff a scarecrow. You may obtain straw, if thats what you choose to use, at nursery and the area. If you are using straw, I would suggest that you do it outside or in a well ventilated area because there is a lot of dust in straw. But, if you dont have access to the straw or you are allergic, then by all means you can use other stuffing materials such as old clothes, rags or even leaves make excellent stuffing material. Once you have built your basic scarecrow then you can use your imagination to accessorize it in any you want, you can add a hat, a pair of gloves, a bandana, some shoes, anything you want, to turn that basic scarecrow from basic to extraordinary. So now lets get started with step number one of making a scarecrow, which is, stuffing the pantyhose.
