• Dental Care - Choosing a Toothbrush

In this video, general dentist Dr. Isabel Kelly emphasizes the importance of good oral hygiene. This video focuses on maintaining good oral hygiene for children, adults, and families. It includes recommendations of dental products and techniques for good home care as well as the recommended dental visits. Dental visits should start by six months of when the first baby tooth appears, and, now, it is recommended no later than at one year of age, instead of three years of age as the video suggests.

Hello, I am Dr. Isabel Kelly with Kelly Dentistry, and I am here to talk to you again about maintaining good oral hygiene. To start maintaining good oral hygiene you need good home care, and were going to start with toothbrushes.

Okay, so, here we have a toothbrush that has soft bristles and its angled, and thats what youre looking for. This is an adult sized toothbrush. You do need an age appropriate toothbrush, and so we also have a youth one too. Now, these toothbrushes you can see are different head sizes, and so that would help with putting the toothbrush head into the patients mouth more easily for a child and more easily for an adult.

The angles are for hugging the toothbrush closer to the tooth. The soft bristles are for making sure that you do not abrade your teeth. You want to make sure when you brush your teeth that you do it in a gentle motion, and you need to make sure that you have a soft bristle toothbrush, otherwise if you do it with a hard motion and with a hard bristle toothbrush, youre going to have abrasion on your teeth and more sensitivity to your teeth.

Now, these are the manual toothbrushes. We also have the electric toothbrushes. These electric toothbrushes are for people who have problems with dexterity and have problems with brushing techniques. Now, you want to make sure that with all these toothbrushes that you replace them -- the toothbrush heads for the electric toothbrush and the manual toothbrushes, you want to replace them every three to four months or when the bristles make fade, otherwise they will be no good. Also, you want to make sure that you do not share toothbrushes with your spouse or with anybody else, because you dont want to share any germs. You do not want to carry any germs when you have toothbrush in a close container, because close containers holds bacteria in there. So, now we will make sure that we have good toothbrush, and next we will talk about toothpaste.
