Bridget Speiser of the Washington Humane Society discusses how to make the process of adopting a cat easier.

Host: What can I do to make the process of adopting a cat easier?

Bridget Speiser: Throughout the process of adopting a cat, you also play a very integral role in easing the information gathering and easing the shelter staff into helping make this match between you and your cat.

So it's really important that you be very communicative with staff, be very open with your -- again your time commitment that you can make to a cat, the level of family commitment that your family members are going to be involved in with the cat.

Certainly the shelter staff is going to have a lot of questions for you, so I would encourage you to have a lot of questions prepared back about, what your expectations might be, what the staff knows about particular animals, where the animals came from, those kinds of things. The shelter do have detailed history on most of the animals that are there, so they should be able to provide for you a good idea of where a kitty is coming from to again help to match where you and kitty lineup in terms of creating a lifelong friendship.
