American Literary Press owner James Frey explains what ISBN numbers are and how they are used.

Host: What is an ISBN number?

Jim Frey: An ISBN number is an industry number that for sure if you plan to market your books, your book is required. It's a 13-digit number that is required to register the book in Bowker's library of books that have been published. No distributor, be it on the internet or in a bookstore won't distribute a book without an ISBN number. So it's an industry standard required for books to be marketed.
