Voice Instructor Jennifer Rutherford discusses why singers should stay away from coffee, soda and juice.

Host: What kinds of beverages should a singer avoid?

Jennifer Rutherford: Remember that things like caffeine are drying for the vocal chords and sodas and very acidic juices also are damaging because you can get acid reflux from that. It's basically filling your stomach with an acidic fluid and then when you cough or bring air up it aspirates on your vocal chords and it is very damaging to them. In fact that you can get nodes on your vocal chord if that happens enough. It's a common cause of hoarseness. People will often think they have Laryngitis when in fact they should just cut down on how much coffee they are drinking.
