Mortgage Consultant Markita Aldridge discusses who is responsible for correcting inaccurate information on your credit report.

Host: Who is responsible for correcting inaccurate information?

Markita Aldridge-Woods: Well, the credit bureau is responsible for doing an investigation. Once you initiate that request, they do have the liability of going and checking with the creditor and making sure that that information is correct. If they don t do that within 30 days of you sending out your request for that, then they have to remove that information because they haven t done the due diligence. Also, the creditor does have some liability to correct information, but they again have to be contacted and told what information is incorrect. So, your best place to get something corrected is with the credit reporting company themselves, which is either Experian, Equifax or Trans Union.
