Learn the basics of the beagle dog breed and find out if it’s the right pet for your family.

Female Speaker: The beagle is one of the most popular dog breeds in America, thanks to their compact size and their friendly playful nature. A member of the AKC Hound Group, beagles are full of energy and are happiest when they are spending time outdoors.

Beagles thrive in active families with the yard, where they can play and explore. A beagle's yard should always be fenced in however, as hound dogs. If they catch sight or scent of a small animal, they will be often running. This trade makes them excellent hunting companions, but a handful at home. Because beagles can be a bit stubborn, it is recommended that training begin early, so that they understand commands to come when called.

Beagles have a classic hound appearance with broad heads, straight and square muzzles, wide drop ears and expressive eyes. They stand just over a foot tall and weigh between 18 and 30 pounds. The short dense coat of the beagle is easy to maintain and comes in typical hound coloring. Tri-color coats are most common among this breed, with a black saddle, white legs, white tail tips, and tan marking around the head and saddle.

Beagles shed year round so they require regular brushing with a hound mitt. They are naturally clean dogs who only require baths as needed. Beagles are kind, fun-loving and patient with children, making them excellent companions for families of all sizes and ages.
