Dr. Guy Eakin: Today, I'm talking about Alzheimer's disease, a devastating and debilitating disease that robs people of their memory. It is a progressive and incurable brain disorder. Currently, more than 5 million Americans are affected by Alzheimer's and another thousand are diagnosed with the disease every day, that's one every 70 seconds.
As America's baby boomers continue to age experts predict that 15 million Americans will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's by the year 2050. This progressive brain disorder creates a major economic drain on the US economy with over $100 billion a year in healthcare cost and lost caregiver and patient wages.
The emotional and physical toll on families as they struggle with round-the-clock caregiving is enormous. In this video series, I'll explain how Alzheimer's affects the brain; then I'll discuss symptoms and diagnoses. I'll talk about treatments available for Alzheimer's and I'll also give some helpful tips for caring for someone living with the disease.
