Assistant Professor of Psychiatry Dr. Kim Penberthy discusses differering degrees of depression.

Host: Are there levels of depression that can be diagnosed from mild to severe?

Dr. Kim Penberthy: Yes, that's a very good question. You can have a diagnosed depression for instance; Major Depressive Disorder has different categories of severity from mild to extremely severe with psychotic symptoms which is a very severe form of depression and the way that that's assessed or by scales, measurements. So questions that we ask you to rate the severity of how depressed you are and for some people their first treatment goal maybe to move from a severe depression to a mild depression and then ultimately, to no depression. But there are definitely different levels of severity of depression.
