Host: Are there things a family can do to build a strong relationship with the health care team?
Robin Vick: In this relationship, I think the foundation for care planning as well as health management and an illness management, the very essence to this is going to be communication and I think it's a principle that may be new to some families, where what I would really love to see happen for in the lives of children is that a family establishes a regular communication with the doctor or the health care team and during those communications there is also going to be periodic health and wellness screening. There will be ongoing assessments of the child as he and she grows, there will be opportunities for discussions about nutrition and social interactions and behavioral care as well as the management of certain types of childhood illnesses. In that conversation as well, there will be an opportunity for the family to talk about the life of the child, the experiences that the family may be undergoing.
Health is very much a holistic principle and the team is going to want to know about the child's experiences his social life, his emotional life, his educational life and his physical and nutritional well being.
