John Basedow: With the holiday season here, it can be a challenge to stick with your diet plan. There are lots of holiday parties and get-togethers that almost always revolve around food. Here are my top tips for staying on track this holiday.
First, never arrive to a party hungry. Try to eat a small yet filling meal before you go. You will be more likely to skip the high fat foods if you are running on a partially full stomach. When eating at a party, pace yourself. You don't have to arrive and head straight for the buffet line, take your time and eat slowly.
Try putting your fork down in between each bite. Chewing more slowly will fill you up with less food. Treat alcohol like a dessert and limit yourself. Drinking too much not only adds calories to your diet, but it can also make you lose control over what you eat. It's easier to stay active during the holidays if you get everyone involved.
Create a new family tradition and take a walk around the neighborhood or go to a local park. You will not only burn extra calories but you will be in a fitness mindset to be more careful about what you eat.
