Andy Davidson, Master Technician from Curry’s Auto Service, demonstrates how to change your oil at home.

Hi! I am Andrew Davidson, Master Technician from Currys Auto Service. We have four locations serving Northern Virginia. Today, we are going to be changing your oil and now, I am going to show you how to prepare your car for an oil change. The first step I am going to take is put on some latex gloves. These will keep your hands protected; keep from getting the oil, something you really dont want to contact with your skin. Remove the oil cap; this is more just to remind me when I put the car back down that I need to refill the oil.

What I am going to do now is remove some these splash shields so that we can get to the oil drain plug and the filters. Some vehicles you may have things like this to remove, some maybe wide open, they do vary. It seems that most of the newer vehicles you are going to run into stuff like this. You would be doing this under your car probably in your garage or driveway. If you are using a floor jack, please always make sure that you have jack stands underneath of it; you never want to use the floor jack as the sole lifting device. So, you want to make sure you have jack stands and the car is properly secured before you get under it to work.

That opens things up really nicely for us and that is how you prepare your car for an oil change.
