Artist Mary Gallagher-Stout demonstrates how to make a opaque design on a hand painted Christmas ornament.

Mary Gallagher-Stout: Hi, I am Mary Gallagher-Stout and today we are painting beautiful glass Christmas ornaments and now I am going to show you a technique that we use without the acrylic Flow Release Medium. We are just going to use Interference color first to coat the inside of the bauble. We are using Interference Violet and in order to make it extra purple and fabulous we are going to use its compliment yellow. Take off the lid. We are going to start with the interference color which these colors are really phenomenal. They are really quite vivid and they are very milky when you put them on in a thick coat. So they work fast when they are not really thick. The thinner you use them, the better. So we are just going to roll it around, you see how much slower this paint moves because there is no medium in there to help it swirl. I am going to shake it up to get it moving. You want to shake it until the bauble is completely coated on the inside till you get full coverage, if thats what you are looking to do. That is what I am looking to do right now.

So I am just going to keep shaking it until it is covered. Now it is completely covered. You can see that and we are going to tap out some of this extra color because like I said, interference colors work fast in thin layers so we are just going to tap out the excess paint. Be not too hard because it is glass and you do not want to break the glass and then cut your fingers and that looks like pretty solid coverage there. Thats just what I am looking for and you are looking for if you are looking to make it look like mine. Then we are going to introduce the yellow which is violets compliment and wait until you see this part with a difference. Wow! It is really beautiful and I am going to shake this up again and I do not think I want it completely covered with this. I think I want it to have some yellow, some straight through and you can just really see how the violet is really popping out with the yellow and I think that is a really beautiful ornament.

And then you are going to let this dry in your egg rack and again you are going to come back then next day once it is completely dry and pop the lid in and hang it on your Christmas tree and you have a gorgeous interference color glass bauble. Coming up next, we are going to paint our ornaments using iridescent glass instead of plain glass.
