Dr. Natasha Withers: Can sugar make your kids hyper? Separating myth from fact may give you some sweet belief.
Myth: Sugar causes disruptive behavior.
Fact: Several large studies have failed to identify a cause or relationship between sugar intake and hyperactive behavior. In attention, it changes in cognitive performance in children.
Myth: High sugar foods contain additives that cause ADHD.
Fact: Food additives and artificial colors, chemicals that often are accompanied high in sugar processed foods, may affect behavior in susceptible children. While food sensitivity maybe associated with behavioral abnormalities, it's infrequently associated with ADHD.
A diet based on fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein with minimal or fine sugars and artificial additives provides the best building blocks for optimal development.
Myth: High sugar foods are easy to spot.
Fact: Sugars can masquerade under many different names. Scan labels for dextrose, fructose, corn sweetener, high fructose corn syrup and maple sugar. These are all variations of sugar.
A food sweetened with sugar alcohols can say zero grams of sugar on the nutritional label. But, if a product is labeled sugar free or no added sugar, the sugar alcohol content is listed separately.
