Travel Reporter Patricia Mario visits with Dr. Beach who is scientifically rating beaches across the US using 50 criteria to build his list. Find out why Dr. Beach thinks Florida is more than just the sunshine state.

Patricia Mario: Hi! I am Patricia Mario and this Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne. Going to beach can be a lot of fun, as long as you don't get too much of sun. It's the chance to get away from the urban sprawl, to medicate, to exercise. But are sun beaches better than others?

According to Dr. Stephen Leatherman also known as Dr, Beach the answer is yes. He has created a list of top 10 beaches in the United States with several Florida beaches prominently in the list.

Dr. Stephen Leatherman: They call me Dr. Beach and I use 50 criteria, you will say 50 criteria! Well my point is I am trying to rate the beaches scientifically, objectively but also including topics that are important to people who want to go recreate on a beach.

Patricia Mario: The Professor at Florida International University has been collecting scientific data for more than 30 years. Dr. Beach says that Florida with the most beaches on the list is not only the State of Sunshine, but the State of Beaches as well.

Dr. Stephen Leatherman: Florida has 825 miles, that's beautiful sandy beaches we got clean and clear water and warm water particularly here in South Florida.

Patricia Mario: The State of Florida is over limestone and there are few rivers and those two facts help produce little sediments giving the water a crystal clear look to it. Most sand beaches in Florida are quartz crystal as well, a fine sand that looks white as snow, mostly found on the Golf Coast of the State.

Another important criteria is human use and impact, you want a beach where there is plenty of recreational options, but at the same time you don't want the beach that's too crowded. Dr. Stephen Leatherman: Well another one criteria for beaches really is clean water and clean sand. So that's that the first thing on my criteria, if you got a chance to see the Golf Coast of Florida or one of my favorite beaches is Siesta Beach, the Crescent Beach in Sarasota, fantastic beaches. Patricia Mario: For an updated list of the top ten beaches in Florida go to drbeach.
