Beth Bates: Hi! I'm Beth Bates with sewteacher.
com, today I'm going to teach you how to make a table cloth. The very first thing we need to do is measure the length and your width of your table. Then, you need to figure out how much access fabric you want to hang off the sides, the table square I'm making today is for a 30 inch round table and I wanted to hang 12 inches off at the corner on either side, 54 x 54 inches.
We got our edges lined up, let's go ahead and take our square and line the short end up along your table edge, take our pencil and cut it. When I actually sew the lining and the fabric together we're going to loose a half an inch on each side in the seam. So be sure to add an extra inch to what you want your finish length and width to be. The edges are lined up and we've got this nice and straight and I have found 55 right here, mark it with your pen, come down here again, 55 and you are going to line all of these pins up and cut it like this. Now we need to do the width.
Unfold your fabric and this time you are going to fold it this way. I'm going to take and cut 55 this way. So now, we need to do the same exact process with our lining, we are going to go ahead and fold it, we need to square it off, we'll measure 55 the same exact as our face fabric and then, we'll go ahead and make those cuts and then we are on to the next step, which is pinning and sewing. Take your decorator fabric, put the pretty side, face down on the lining, line them up. Take our stick pins, pin them 2 to 3 inches apart, make sure the pin goes through both of them and we're going to pin all the way around the square and I've left a space about this big and I'm going to leave this space open, so that we could turn it inside out. In this particular step we are going to be sewing the lining to the face fabric. Continue to sew all the way around the table cloth, using a half inch end seam pulling out the pins as I go, now let's find that opening. I'm going to gently pull it through, take your iron, go all the way around.
The last thing we need to address is this opening. Fold it and iron that and pin it, iron and pin this open and closed. And then, our next step will be sewing it closed at the sewing machine. I have changed down my thread at the top to the same color as my face fabric. I have left the bottom white however because it will be on the underside and it will match our white lining, don't forget to back tack.
Now for the fun part, put it on the table. Be sure to smooth it out nice and neat. I hope you enjoy your new table cloth.
