Female Speaker: Did you know many apple types are the offspring of two other varieties? Take the Empire, whose parents are the McIntosh and the Red Delicious. It certainly has characteristics of both. Deep scarlet red, with a faint stripe, they are crisp on the outside, but tender on the inside.
The Empire has a sweet tart flavor, with a creamy white flesh. They can be used for almost anything and are available fall through summer. Empires are great all-purpose apples, but I love them in sandwiches. That's right, sandwiches.
Here is a great tip, instead of the traditional grilled cheese, slice up Empire apples, chipotle Havarti and Vermont maple syrup breakfast sausage. Make these for your friends and you will build an Empire of fans fast.
