Horticulturist Mitch Baker provides a few tips for keeping lawns and gardens looking fresh and green in the late weeks of summer.

Mitch Baker: As the summer comes to an end, warm temperatures and strong sun is still around, be sure not to neglect your lawn and garden by following a few simple tips. Add some late color to the garden with a few choice perennials and woody ornamentals like the hardy hibiscus and butterfly weed. Watering your lawn and garden maybe the most important thing you can do towards the end of summer.

And although it's too early to do well lawn renovation, there are things that can be done to the lawn right now, such as, applying lime, getting the weeds under control, maybe applying some compost tea. Also maintaining those perennials and shrubs this time of the year with some deadheading and a little light pruning, keeps them looking at their best. And watch out for insects and disease that tend to crop up this time of the year.

If you see any signs of these pests, contact your local garden center to find out how to fight them off early. Your lawn and garden will be thriving with just a little extra care and maintenance. Good luck!
