Face painter Michelle Johnson demonstrates how to paint a butterfly, including what tools you’ll need.

Michelle Johnson: Hi! I am Michelle Johnson, known as the Face Paint Lady and I will be working with you today on how to create a lovely face painted butterfly. The first thing, you will need to know is what tools of the trade, you will need to have to create this beautiful butterfly. The first thing that you will need is an assortment of brushes, your brushes should be round, they should be of synthetic fiber and they should be able to hold up in water, so sables and other natural bristles bend over so the synthetic bristles is what you will need. To create the areas of larger color, you will need a sponge, this is called a hydrous sponge and the hydrous sponge is particularly meant for use in water. The sponge that I use comes in a large, oval, round shape that needs to be cut into quarters, when I cut my sponge into quarters, I have one, two, three, four about five working surfaces.

So, as I use the paints and the different colors, I can use the different edges of my sponge. You will need paints and the paints that I use are always cosmetic, they are available through local theatrical supply houses. I really like using the beautiful neon butterfly paints and they create a very dazzling, magnificent, winged flying rainbow. So, you need your paints, you need your brushes, you need your sponges, and of course you will need water to make all of this happen. We will talk about finishing touches later but those are the tools that will get you started on making a beautiful painted rainbow butterfly and next thing will talk about is the wonderful butterfly wings. See you soon.
