Dr. Christina Johns: Flu season is definitely here and that's no fun for anybody. It's really important to know what the flu is and what are some of the most common symptoms. The flu is a collection of symptoms that are caused by a bunch of different viruses and the symptoms that we typically see are headache, high fever, runny nose, cough, congestion, muscle aches, it can last for 48 hours, up until a week and sometimes even more. Other illnesses can cause similar symptoms as the flu, like strep throat or sinusitis. And those require different treatment. So it's really important that you see your doctor to make sure that you have what you think you have. So what do we do to try to make ourselves feel better when we have the flu? Well, a couple of things are really important. First of all drinking lots and lots of fluids, when you get a fever your body's fluid losses actually increase, so you got to stay hydrated. An important way to soothe irritated airways from coughing is to use a humidifier. Increasing the humidity in the air will help soothe of some of the inflammation in your nose and in the airways down towards your lungs. Taking fever reducers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen and resting as much as we can. I know it's no fun to have the flu but hopefully some of the strategies we have talked about today can help you survive the flu.
