Dr. Matt Leavitt, President of the Hair Foundation, provides basic hair care tips for aging and thinning hair.

Matt L. Leavitt, DO: One of the questions that we're often confronted with is the fact that as people get older, they feel like their hair is getting more dry, more brittle, it's just a lot less shiny, it has dull appears to it. And that's correct, as you do age, some of these changes are absolutely occurring.

There are things you can do to combat these changes, you can use shampoos that actually are more moisturizing, you could do a deep leave-in, a conditioner, and there are actually products that your stylist can recommend that can help add some of that luster and shine back to your hair.

Additionally, one of the things that can really cause the hair to become a lot drier is blow drying your hair on too hot of a setting, so you want to go to warmer or low setting and that should make a difference.

One of the most common asked questions is what can I do with gray hair, and unfortunately right now we really don't have that answer.

Fortunately, we are doing studies across the country in some very well-known institutions to try to get a better answer, so say tuned.

In the meantime, certainly working with the right stylist, coloring your hair, the right type of a haircut, all these things can give you a much younger looking hairstyle.

If you want to keep the color in your hair longer, I have a couple important suggestions. One is to use a shampoo or conditioner that are specific for color-treated hair, secondly is to give yourself some UV protection, there are sprays specific to this, and there is also some other treatments that are specific for protecting against ultraviolet light. A little bit can go a long way.
