Host: How can I comprehend the dynamics of professional listening skills?
Sean McArdle: Well, like anything in life, listening should be learned. It is not something that we are taught when we are children, except to the extent that our parents say; Listen and then they expect us to do so. But, what does the word now mean to a child? Answer- absolutely nothing. Why? Because they are learning how to get what they want and so, they don t actually listen to what you are saying. They listen in terms of your response to what they are asking for. So, how do you learn the dynamics? You sit down and make a decision to listen on purpose. You gain information from people who know more than you do about the topic and then you take notes and learn the process of listening and put it into practice, one little piece at a time or what I called incrementally until you become a more effective listener.
