Host: How can I control my cravings for simple carbs?

Jeannette Bessinger: With simple carbohydrates, the more you eat, the more you want. You probably discover that if you are on a roller coaster and craving these all the time. There are some tricks that you can use. One of them is to if when you are eating your meal to actually eat the protein first. That slows down the rate of absorption in your small intestine of the sugar and so it acts like time-release and it will make you feel a little more full, a little more comfortable and it will diminish your cravings somewhat.

You don t want to go more than four hours without eating something because that will trigger at very extreme hunger and probably for simple sugars. So, eat at least every four hours. Another trick which may not be intuitive especially for nighttime eating is to eat your breakfast. If you have a healthy breakfast, especially if you include some protein, you might find that your nighttime cravings will calm down a little bit over time.
