Host: How can I help my college-age child after a campus shooting?
Dr. Hayley Sherwood: After a college shooting, it is important to let your child know that you are thinking about him or her and show your support with phone calls, e-mails and cards. Encourage your child to talk with friends, classmates and professors about how he or she is feeling. Find out about college counseling services and how your child can access them. Ask what the college is doing to help students cope during this difficult times and encourage your child to get involved in activities planned in response to the tragedy. Remind your child to take care of him or herself by taking breaks from ongoing media coverage, participating in things he or she enjoys and avoiding alcohols, drugs and other high risk activities.
