Dr. Hayley Sherwood: School shootings are sobering and tragic events that cause significant concerns about the safety of children. Even though the news has been filled with reports of school shootings lately, incidents in schools are actually lower than in previous years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of child and youth homicides that are school related make up less than one percent of the total number of child and youth homicides in the United States.
