Speaker: How do you begin the process to compete a college application?
Jerome Cole: Well, I think the first thing that you want to do as a student is once you make your decision on which schools you are going to apply to. You want to get the application, find a nice, quite place and sit down and read it from beginning to end. You want to make sure that you read the instructions very carefully and understand exactly what it is that they are asking for. If you have questions you should always consult with a counselor or call the school directly, I am filling out the application; I am reading something here that I don't quite understand could you clarify it for me. You don't want to go and make assumptions when you are filling out a college application. So thats the first thing you want to do is read it.
I think the second step is to take a piece of paper and write down what you are required to do to complete an application. In other words, each application is going to be a little bit different. One application is going to want an essay, one is going to want several essays; one is going to want this particular information and other is going to want another set of information. So what you want to do is just come up with a list of all the things that you are going to be required to complete that application. So I think that's Step 2.
Step 3 is to identify someone, i.
, a parent or a counselor, a teacher, someone who you trust to review that application once its completed and then the very last thing you want to do is you want to make sure you know when its due; what's the deadline; and set a realistic goal for yourself as to when you can complete that application so that you can get it turned in on time.
