Home design expert Sherry Tyra shares her tips for creating a cozy guestroom for visators during the holidays.

Sherry Tyra: When hosting out of town guests, you want to make them feel welcome and comfortable as possible. By adding a few special touches to your guestroom, you can create a wonderful place for your guest to relax. When planning your guestroom, think about the types of things you'd find in a luxury hotel. First and foremost, be sure to provide luxurious linens, lots of extra pillows, blankets, towels, and washed clothes will give your guest the feeling they're staying at a lavish suite. I love to provide a welcome basket with a pen, paper, and an array of snacks for my guests. It's a nice surprise when they enter the room and it makes them feel special.

In addition, a toiletry basket with travel sizes of shampoo, conditioner, soaps, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and Q-tips are thoughtful items to have on hand. Other must haves are a full-length mirror, a lighted alarm clock, and a ceiling fan or a small table fan for guests who enjoy sleeping with a little light noise. A television is a nice addition for your guests who want to relax on their own.

Remember, some people like to sleep in total darkness, while some like a little light. A simple on/off style nightlight works best in the guestroom, while the nightlight with a built-in sensor is perfect for guest bathroom or hallway. Your friends and family don't have to stay in a hotel to feel comfortable. By adding a few simple touches, you can make them feel special and welcome.
