Eleisha Ensign from TexaSweet Citrus Marketing demonstrates how to correctly cut a grapefruit.

Alicia: Hi! I am Alicia with TexaSweet Citrus Marketing. We work with the growers of Texas grapefruit and oranges. Today I would like to talk with you about the Rio Star Grapefruit. This grapefruit is only grown in Texas; it is a very red, sweet variety of grapefruit.

I would like to show you the easiest way to cut a grapefruit. So, first you want to look for the points on each end and you want to put those on the sides, then you cut right down along the edge, perfect! You see that nice deep red color inside and then you take your knife and you cut, right down along each side like this and you want to get all of that white membrane off.

The white part, the pit of the grapefruit is actually rather tart and bitter. So now, you want to take a knife and I like to use a smaller knife and cut right down along the section, so you'll look for the white line and when you get to the center, you turn your knife and cut right back up and you pop up the section, that simple, and then you follow it all the way around.

Once you get them removed, these little sections are perfect to throw into a salad or toss with some avocado slices. This is what you are wanting to get, this beautiful section right here. Now the great thing about a grapefruit is, it's super good for you too, it has 100% of your daily Vitamin C and it also lycopene in it, only 60 calories and a half a grapefruit.

You can also cut a grapefruit into wedges as shown here, and also you can just simply cut it in half and eat it with a grapefruit spoon. My favorite way to eat a grapefruit is just like this in these sections. What I like to do is cut a whole bag of grapefruit and put them in my refrigerator and you can snack all week long.

So this is the simple way to cut a grapefruit. We hope you enjoy your Rio Star grapefruit today.
