Grooming Lounge co-founder Pirooz Sarshar explains how to do a men’s home pedicure.

Pirooz Sarshar: Hi! I am Pirooz Sarshar, co-founder of the Grooming Lounge. I am showing you the basics of the mens hands and feet grooming. Now I am going to show you how to do an at-home pedicure. Taking good care of your feet is just as important as caring for your hands; without proper maintenance, your feet could end up looking and smelling pretty gross. I recommend getting a professional pedicure at least every couple of months. Its a very relaxing experienence and requires no effort on your part, however, if you dont feel comfortable getting your feet professionally pampered, I am here to teach you how to do it yourself in the privacy of your own home.

The first thing you want to do is to soak your feet in a tub of warm soapy water for about 5-10 minutes; you can even use your bath tub if necessary. Now I am at the Grooming Lounge, and obviously, we dont have a bucket or a tub like you would have in your shower at home. So I am using a professional pedicure chair if youre wondering what this contraction is here. And I have been soaking my feet now in this water for about five minutes. Now if you are cursed with smelly feet, you can also add a couple of tea bags to this part of water. The tea bags help disinfect the feet and dry out sweat glands. While your feet are still soaking, use your pumice stone to smooth out the bottoms of your feet. Its best to do this while your skin is soft and wet, and all pedro (ph) and pumice stones come with two sides; one side is very rough this is sandy side and what this does it helps eliminate all the dead skin. So if you look at my toe right here at my second toe, you see that dead skin right there. Now watch this, as I use the pedro stone, youll notice that all that dead skin is starting to disappear and are starting to come off. And you want to do this when your feet are soaking in wet; if you dont do it when your feet are soaking in wet and you do it dry, the chances are you can hurt yourself, you can scratch your feet, you can basically do the opposite of what supposed to be achieved. Now that I have used the rough side, I want to use the smooth side to basically soften the bottom of my feet. Dont feel like you have to get rid off all that roughness at once; it takes several pedicures to really get rid of all the tough skin on your feet, especially if youve never had one before. Next, you want to dry off your feet and take out your file and clean underneath your toe nails with the file. So remember you want to go one direction; you dont want to go back and forth because you can push the dirt and bacteria into your toe nails. You want to clean until you can run the file under your nails and not dig out any dirt or sediment. Built up dirt and bacteria under the nails makes the feet smell bad and it could lead to an infection. Wash your feet with soap when you are done. Once youre done washing your feet with soap, you want to dry everything off and now with your toenail clippers, trim your nails leaving just a small thin white line at tips. Start up by cutting the middle when you are cutting your toe nails or you can square them off, which is what I would prefer, followed by the sides. You want to create a circular or box shape. Be careful not to cut them too short; this can lead to ingrown toenails which can be quite painful. Okay, you can see that I am leaving that white line, see how long that is. Now watch it and here very lightly, just like that. Now once you are done trimming your nails, use your file to smooth the edges of your nails. You want to move in one direction only; just like this. Remember I said Ill take of the shape and make it look a lot neater and watch, look at that shape. By the time, I am done using my file, you can see it looks so much neater and so much better. Same here, they look like nails again. The next step is pushing back your cuticles. Now what you want to do is you want to apply cuticle oil to your cuticles and wait about 30 seconds or so to allow it to fully absorb, and you can also massage the cuticle oil into your cuticle just like this, okay. Once your cuticles are nice and soft, use your cuticle stick to push the cuticles back. Never cut your cuticles; they can lead to infection, not to mention irritation of the skin okay. So what I am going to do here is I am going to take my cuticle stick and Im going bring this a little bit closer and I am going to start pushing that cuticles just like this and not forcing anything okay and I want to come around and clean like that. I am using the sharp edge here, you see. I am taking that dead skin from my cuticle, I am just cleaning it. Okay, then same thing here; I am going to come here and will push my cuticle back. Then I am going to take this and want to clean any other dead skin. Just look them, look at the condition of my feet. Look how much more moisturized it look. Look at my cuticles, look how much cleaner they look and if you look around my toes, you dont have that white dry skin anymore that was showing before. Finally, apply a heavy moisturizing foot cream. For maximum softness, coat your feet with a foot cream and put on a pair of socks afterwards, a pair that you dont wear very much and you dont really care about. This will help sealing the moisture, wear them overnight and youll awaken to softer, smoother feet. Just be careful; stepping into the shower the next day, chances are your feet are going to be very slippery. So thats how to give yourself a pedicure. I hope these tips for grooming your hands and feet will be helpful. Next, well discuss some common issues facing men and their feet.
