Amy McGory: When you are stressed, your body releases a surge of hormones including cortisol, too much in your blood stream causes inflammation which breaks down collagen and causing thin skin, fine lines and dryness. Here are few simple steps to curve your stress levels and keep your skin looking great at any age.
First, brew some tea. Is there anything more comforting than an afternoon cup of tea? Science doesn't think so. One study showed that cortisol levels of regular black tea drinkers fell by almost 50% when given a stressful task to do.
Tea has skin boosting antioxidants and naturally occurring chemicals like polyphenols and flavonoids which give its calming effects. Second, slash stress with superfoods. The food we put in our bodies has a direct impact on what shows up on our skin. Making the right diet choices will keep you calm and send cortisol levels plummeting.
Go for dark color greens, like spinach, broccoli and fruits rich in vitamin C such as berries and oranges. Fully found in leafy vegetables helps make new skin cells and vitamin C smooths and grooms skin.
Third, just say OM, recent study show that daily meditation calms you and drops cortisol levels after just a few months of regular practice. Any activity whether it's yoga or hiking can be meditative if you are present in the moment and engage your senses.
Whatever method helps calm your nerves will also help calm skin. And those are just a few ways to relax, recharge and smooth your skin.
