Handy man Joe Wise demonstrates how to install a garbage disposer.

Joe Wise: Hi, I am Joe Wise, owner of Built Wise Construction in Orlando, Florida. Today we are going to go over how to install a garbage disposer. As you can hear with this one is really ready to be replaced. It is going to take some basic tools to do that job with. First, we will need a pen to collect water when we disconnect the trap, we will need a pair of channel locks, pencil, an old towel to lay on and catch water, extra water that gets away from us, hacksaw or a PVC pipe cutter to redo the waste lines, plumber's putty, a pipe wrench, screwdrivers with usually Phillips head end are common and then we are going to need a measuring tape, plumbing connectors like sink traps, tailpieces, the dishwasher tailpieces and that kind of thing. I always buy a little extra because you never know what you are going to need when you get in there, but there again you are dealing with household products that are chemicals. You don't want to mix any chemicals that would be hazardous to you and also you are going to be dealing with electrical when you disconnect the electricity from this unit. So you don't want to shock yourself and you want to make sure you take the proper precautions to turn all electrical off and get all of the water out of here before you do that. I have been in the remodeling business for about 29 years and I do doors, windows, this type of repair on a daily basis. As you can see, we have already got this out cleaned out, so we are going to go disconnect the electricity so we don't shock ourself. 1
