Eric Haataja: Hi! I am Eric Haataja with Take Me Fishing. Today, I am going to show you how to land a fish. Once the fish is reeled in close enough to the boat that you can no longer reel anymore, it's time to land the fish.
First thing you want to do is make sure the fish is ready to be landed based on the fishs body position, if that fish is swimming down and it's tail is digging down and it's not quite ready to come in, but when that fish comes up and it breaks the surface, lays on it's side, thats when that fish is ready to be landed.
Start by getting closer to the end of your rod and line. Make sure that your hands are wet and then grab the fish gently below the belly to remove the hook. You always want to try and land bigger fish with a net.
Place a net in the water next to the boat and leave the fish in head first. This will help protect the fishs slime coating. If you are going to release the fish, make sure to keep it in the water, otherwise get the hook out as quickly as possible.
Now that you have landed that fish, give yourself a good old pad on the back, throw that lure right back out there.
