Sherry Tyra: Moving to a new residence can be exciting, but it can also be extremely stressful for the entire family. I am going to give you some helpful hints that will keep you organized and cool throughout the moving process.
Start by creating a moving file. Keep all your papers and important information regarding your move in this file. Many times moving expenses are reimbursable or tax deductible. So you will want to keep all receipts.
Create a To Do checklist in the timeline of when you need to accomplish the tasks. 3 to 4 months before you move, select a moving agent, arrange for any truck rentals and purchase packing supplies.
2 to 3 months before you move, clean and declutter your house. Donate unwanted goods or have a garage sale. Begin by packing up items that you won't need for the next couple of months. Take photos of all your possessions and make an inventory list, include model and serial numbers and the purchase date and price for future insurance claims.
One month before you move, finish packing as much as you can. Label boxes with the items they contain in the room they belong in. Call to cancel current utilities and services and to initiate these services at your new home. Make a note of the day you called and who you spoke with. Get copies of medical records and any other important papers that you will need for your new home.
Finally, pack a small suitcase. Make sure you have changes of clothing, toiletries, medications and anything else you may need during the move.
Planning ahead will go a long way to ensure that your next move is smooth and stress free.
