Dr. Natasha Withers: Back pain is a very common complaint; just about everyone will experience an episode of at least once in their life. So, here are some tips to keep your back healthy and pain free.
The truth is surgery is rarely used to treat back pain. Instead, even the most severe back pain can be treated by taking anti-inflammatory medication or alternative treatments such as osteopathic or chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture or physical therapy. But, if your back pain is associated with leg weakness or bowel or bladder difficulty, definitely let your doctor know right away.
Most back pain is caused by things like stress, improper heavy lifting or sudden awkward movements. All things that you can try to prevent by improving your physical condition and practicing proper body mechanics, especially important to add is core strengthening exercises to routine to build your abdominals and your back muscles which support your spine.
Don't smoke, it diminishes the oxygen levels in your spinal tissue which hinders healing. Also maintain a healthy weight, as being overweight puts a lot of strain on your back and when you lift something let your legs do the work, keep your back straight and bend only at the knees.
