Eric Haataja with Take Me Fishing discusses how to use the drag on your reel.

Eric Haataja: I am Eric Haataja with Take Me Fishing. Today I am going to show you how to set the drag on your spinning reel. Once you have rigged up your line, you want to set the drag. The drag mechanism on your reel is designed to allow you to set how much pressure a fish feels when it pulls on the line. The tighter you set the drag, the more pressure the fish will feel.

To tight the drag, turn the top crank of your reel your right. To loosen the drag, turn the top crank to the left. You will want to set it tight enough so that the fish can be brought into the boat without breaking the line under stress.

When you are setting the drag, it's really important to tighten that drag down as tight as it will go so you can feel that tension right there on the spinning reel. It's also equally as important to loosen that drag up so you can feel how loose it goes and when you are setting the drag, you want to set it somewhere right in between there so you have some steady to moderate tension on your spinning reel.

You shouldnt have to change your drag too much when you are fishing, unless you happen to hook a really big fish that pulls out of bunch of line really fast, then you are going to want to go ahead and loosen up that drag.
