Hula dance experts Kanekia and Makanani demonstrate how to dance to “Little Brown Gal,” a traditional Hula Dance song including the ami and uwehe steps.

Kanekia: Aloha, my name is Kanekia, this is Makanani. Today we are going to teach you how to Hula to 'Little Brown Gal'. Right now we are about to learn Ami and Uwehe. The basic Hula step Ami begins by rotating your hips to the front, side, back and side so you are just making a circular motion with your hips. You can also do this in a circle while turning, we call this 'Around the Island'. To do this you pivot around the left foot while you step slowly with the right foot around the left foot. Let's do this again in 8 counts. Ready begin one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four great.

The next step is called Uwehe. To do Uwehe, we are going to step with the right foot first in place and lift both heels up in a popping motion and then back down. We repeat it with the other foot, left foot first, heels lift, good. We are going to do this in four counts, ready begin one two, three, four great. And that is the Uwehe. Coming up next we will be teaching you the first verse of 'Little Brown Gal'.
