Dietitian Sarah Alligood discusses how much weight to lose to improve your health.

Host: If I am overweight, how much weight do I have to lose to improve my health?

Sarah Alligood: Well, you might be surprised to find out that you really dont have to lose a whole lot of weight to improve your health. Studies show that if you can lose somewhere between 5 and 10% of your body weight you can do wonders to reduce your risk of health problems or maybe if you are already experiencing them, reduce the severity of the problems that you are having. So for example, if you weigh 180 pounds, 10% of that would be about 18 pounds, 5% would be half of that, around 9 pounds. So losing somewhere between 9 and 18 pounds could really do wonders for your health. It is important to remember also that a healthy rate of weight loss would be somewhere between half a pound and two pounds a week. It is not realistic to try to lose more weight than that a week and you probably won't be able to succeed if you set yourself up for that.
