John Linden: Hi! I'm John Linden, Master ASE Certified Technician and North America Training Manager for Midas International Corporation. Today I am talking about the importance of changing your car's air filter to increase the performance and in the case of older vehicles the fuel efficiency of your vehicle.
The engine air filter has two primary purposes; it keeps dirt and debris from entering the engine and causing mechanical problem. It also allows fresh air to enter the engine to mix with the fuel creating combustion.
If you restrict the air the engine needs it has to work harder and you will feel a loss of power or acceleration and in older vehicles a restricted air filter reduces the amount of air to mix with the fuel, which causes which is known as running ridge. Meaning you engine is using more fuel than normal.
On most vehicles it's easy to check and change the air filter. There are few vehicles that require tools so you may want a professional to do this for you. To remove the air filter simply unclip the pins, take the cover off, take the air filter out, look at it, if its okay put it back in, if not put a new one in. Put the cover back on and re-clip it and you are ready to go.
So that's how to change your air filter and how to increase the performance and in some cases the fuel efficiency of your vehicle.
