Swimming expert David Penlard demonstrates the swimming exercise, floating on your back.

David Penland: Hi! I'm David with the Northern Virginia Swim League and this morning we are teaching you how to teach your child how to swim. In this segment we are going to talk about being comfortable in the water and floating on your back. It's very important when you are teaching your child how to swim, that you teach them to be comfortable in the water. What we are going to do here, is we are going to teach you how to lie back and float on your back. Alright, so my assistant this morning is Sunshine and now we are going to teach you how to float on your back. Right Sunshine, I need you to relax and lie back. Good. Now put your head back, alright and breathe deep. There you go, very good. When you are in this position, you want to make sure that you are a little safe with your child. That you have your hand under their back and your hand on their stomach, so that they are comfortable. You can allow them put their arms out and you want to make sure that they are breathing deep and just be real comfortable in the water. And eventually, you can take your hands away. In the next segment, we are going to talk about how to propel yourself through the water.
