Female Speaker: This well-rounded fellow is the Macoun apple. It's dark red with purple flesh, tender and tart with strong skin that gives way to a crunchy white juicy flesh. I love them for snacking and they are just sweet enough for making apple cider and even apple sauce. Perfect for the fall season when they are available.
Macouns are grown mainly in the Northeast and have a very loyal following. Don't pass one up when you find one in your grocery aisle. My favorite Macoun recipe, the ultimate three step apple salad, mix up Hearty apple chicken sausage, chunks of Macoun and crunchy walnuts pieces for a healthy satisfying salad. Oh, and be sure to eat the skin.
Most of the antioxidants including vitamin C are found in or just below the surface. For your health and for great taste; it's the Macoun.
