Fitness expert John Basedow shares his tips and tricks for making the most of your indoor cardio workout.

John Basedow: When the weather starts to get colder, many people take their workouts indoors. It's important to keep a consistent cardio routine so you continue to burn those calories. Here are a few of the top indoor cardio workouts to try.

First the elliptical; it's one of the most popular machines in the gym for a good reason. It's easy on the joints, but also provides a great cardio workout. Even more impressive is that you can target your entire body. Increase the incline to the max to focus on your glutes or let go of the handles to focus on your core.

Next on the list is the stair climber. Climbing stairs is an aerobic endurance exercise which helps tone the body. It works the quads, the glutes and the calves which results in a toned butt and legs.

Third is a stationary bike. Be sure to set the machine with enough resistance so you won't peddle yourself off the bike, but you will be able to sprint when necessary. Changing up the pace works both the heart and lungs giving you a great cardio workout.

And finally the treadmill; if you are just getting started, consider a routine that incorporates both walking and running. Whatever cardio equipment you choose, be sure to allow your body time to warm up. A good 5 to 10 minutes will do it. Also incorporate interval training. Start with 30 seconds at a fast pace and one minute off. This will help get your muscle fibers engaged and will give you the body you have been looking for.
