Mary Gallagher-Stout: Hi, I am Mary Gallagher-Stout and today we are going to be making a lovely Paper Mache bowl. To make this bowl first I will show you how to prepare the paste and then I will show you how to adhere the pasted pieces of newspaper on to the mold. Then we are going to adhere the bottom portion of the mold on with masking tape and more paper mache, then we are going to let it dry and then we are going to paint it with either a latex paint or a jesso and then we will talk about decorating your paper mache bowl and making it lovely.
We will need for the supplies newspapers, balloons for the mold, glue, masking tape, paint brushes, paint or jesso. You will also need some cardboard to cut a circular base just so the bowl doesn't roll over and you are going to need scissors or X-Acto knife to do the trimming of your bowl to make it nice and flush. Just remember if you are working with children that they are very sharp edges and you need to be careful not to cut yourself. Another thing that you might want to know when you are using these bowls not to put any food into the bowl, that it needs to be covered because they are not food safe. I am a Studio Artist at the Lorton Workhouse and I own and operate my decorative painting company called Mary Gallagher Stout LLC. So let's get started on our paper mache bowl.
