Roxanne Moore: Hey, I am Roxanne Moore from Sodexo and with me today is Phoebe. Now Phoebe I want to ask you something, you are a pretty busy girl, arent you? So what kind of things do you like to do for fun?
Phoebe: I like to play sports and hang with my friends.
Roxanne Moore: So Phoebe, I am sure with you being so busy, your family doesn't get much time to sit down, they are probably eating food on the go all the time, right?
Phoebe: Yeah. We usually eat quickly, but we try and find some time to sit down as a family.
Roxanne Moore: So I think its really important for you and your family to take some time to sit down and enjoy meals together, so to help families like yours, we are going to make some meals and snacks that people can take on the go.
Now when you're making meals and snacks for on the go, its really important to include some protein, do you know why protein is important?
Phoebe: It keeps your muscles strong.
Roxanne Moore: Thats correct! Protein does help keep your muscles strong, but it also helps to fill you up. A lot of people don't realize that, so it's really important that when you're making meals and snacks on the go that you do include some protein, so what do you want to do first?
Phoebe: I make a fruit smoothie.
Roxanne Moore: So we could use different types of fruits in this smoothie, but what is your favorite, what are we going to use today?
Phoebe: I like strawberries and bananas. First peel the banana and place it in the blender, then add 1/2 a cup of strawberries and low fat yogurt. I am using plain flavored, 1 cup of 1% milk, 1/2 a teaspoon of cinnamon and a few ice cubes, cover and blend until smooth. Then its ready to pour.
Roxanne Moore: Now if you dont have a blender you can still make a smoothie, just simple put all your fruit together in a bowl, mash it up, whip all the ingredients together and serve it over ice. Do you know which ingredients in the smoothie contain protein?
Phoebe: The milk and the yogurt.
Roxanne Moore: You are absolutely right. This smoothie is a great way to get energy and you can put it into go cup. So what do were going to make next?
Phoebe: Now I am going to show how to make trail mix. The protein source in this is the nuts.
Roxanne Moore: So if you are allergic to nuts you can substitute sunflower seeds in this recipe instead.
Phoebe: Thats right. In a bowl you can blend 3/4 cup unsalted roasted peanuts, 1/3 cup raisins 1 cup whole wheat cereal squares, 1 cup mini pretzels and 1/3 cup chocolate chips. Then mix them up. You can then scoop the trail mix into about 8 individual serving baggies and thats it, just remember to keep the trail mix cold so the chocolate chips dont melt.
Roxanne Moore: You can also try other types of dry fruits, like dried cranberries and blueberries. Phoebe, thank you so much for helping us make these healthy on the go snack ideas.
